I know you hate to hear this, but it depends on the project. Some projects are quick read-throughs with a few grammar corrections. Others require substantive editing, i.e. lots of rewording and content suggestions, fact checking and queries back to you. Email me a few pages and I can give you an estimate. For novels and non-fiction books, fees vary from $1-$3 per double-spaced page. of about 250 words. For web content, an hourly or per-article rate set by the client is common. For theses and dissertations, depending on the amount of editing needed, my fee is usually $3-$5 per page.
Generally speaking, I ask $30 an hour. This rate is somewhat flexible. It depends on the intensity of the work, for example, the amount of research required, the urgency of the deadline, and so forth.
I'm a long-time writer and editor of educational materials in the language arts, literature and history fields. I also have done some very "substantive editing" of these and dissertations on a variety of topics. I'm widely-read in health issues (both human and pet).
I've worked successfully with a number of writers who want to stop procrastinating and write that book they've had running through their head for years. They tell me I have a knack for knowing what they're trying to say, and that my suggestions for revision are made in a kind and considerate way. Well, I just treat people the way I want to be treated. I understand how precious that book is.
